The twice-yearly Moyie Mud Bog, a Mother's Day tradition, was replete with big trucks, lots of mud and a huge crowd enjoying the suspense of whether the powerful rigs would make it through the mud-filled trench. The spectators cheered when the rigs got through, they cheered when they got stuck and had to be towed, and they cheered when the trucks rolled and the driver emerged safely.
Safe to say, there was a lot of cheering going on during the three-day event of perfect weather, good food from the Cook Shack and lots of friendship between people who enjoy a good time. Bruce Behrman, who has hosted the event for many years on his land north of the Moyie Store, believes that the Mud Bog is such a great event for Boundary County because there is something to appeal to everyone who loves four-wheeling.
We had live bands this year and free camping. We try to make a family deal out of it," he said. Darlissa Thomas, one of the organizers of the popular Mud Bog, explained, "We bring a lot of money into this county. This weekend was pretty mild. We don't let people leave who are obviously drunk. If they are drunk and try to leave, we take their keys, find them a place to sleep and check on them in the morning. We don't allow any bottles and we try to make this huge event as safe as possible.
We run security 24 hours a day. There are about 65 people on staff for the weekend, to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. We try to keep things quiet at night after a certain time because we don't want to disturb our neighbors. We rented 70 port-a-potties and 7 light towers. My wife, Kathryn, and I work regular jobs in addition to putting on this event.
We let all our neighbors and enlisted military personnel in free of charge. The police are beginning to work with us. Chuck Quillan, owner of Three Mile Travel Plaza said that there was a definite increase in business at his store due to the Mud Boggers. Tom Wheeler of Elmira, ID, said, "It's too bad we don't have more activities like this in the community. Because, you know what?
All these people would be going somewhere else, but because of the Mud Bog, they brought their money to Boundary County. And I am reasonably sure many of these strange hybrids would never have been built, unless the owners were under the influence of a great deal of alcohol! And sometimes, there are creations like this one, inspired by mechanical genius and the finest wine And yes, she is a tomboy Our kind of redneck girl indeed!
The ultimate mechanical hybrid! Eat your heart out, Toyota Prius! So ladies, bring your bikinis and enjoy a day like you have never seen! Even if you lose, there are certain fringe benefits! And there is just something about a beautiful gal when she is covered in mud!
